Alberta PIPA Copilot

Alberta's private-sector privacy statute, not a PIPEDA clone.

What the Alberta PIPA Copilot Can Do

Walk Alberta PIPA by Part and section title from the official Act

Separate Alberta PIPA from BC PIPA and from PIPEDA so you do not paste the wrong statute into the file

Draft consent, access, and correction documentation against the Alberta section numbers

Prepare incident and notification records where the Act titles those duties

Cross-map to PIPEDA for inter-provincial and international commercial activity

Keep the 2024 Alberta public-sector Protection of Privacy Act (SA 2024, c. P-28.5) out of this page. That is a different statute

About Alberta PIPA Copilot

Alberta PIPA Copilot helps organisations that collect, use, or disclose personal information in Alberta work through the Personal Information Protection Act, SA 2003, c. P-6.5. It is the provincial counterpart to PIPEDA for most intra-Alberta private-sector activity. Documentation support only. Not legal advice and not an OIPC Alberta determination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alberta PIPA the same as PIPEDA?

No. PIPEDA is the federal commercial-activity statute. Alberta PIPA is the provincial private-sector statute, deemed substantially similar under PIPEDA s. 26(2)(b) for most intra-Alberta activity. Federally regulated works, undertakings and businesses stay with PIPEDA. See /learn/pipeda-vs-quebec-law-25 for the federal/provincial split pattern.

Is this the same PIPA as British Columbia?

No. Same short name, different statute (SA 2003, c. P-6.5 vs SBC 2003, c. 63), different OIPC. Use /frameworks/ca-bc-pipa for British Columbia.

Does the Copilot replace Alberta privacy counsel?

No. It drafts documentation against the official section titles. An OIPC Alberta file or a substantially-similar determination is legal work.
